Definition. A coding agent is a software-engineering runtime that can inspect a repository, make changes, run tools or tests, and produce a proposed result. The production problem is verification and control, not code generation alone.
Constrain the workspace
Give agents a defined repository, branch or workspace, scoped credentials and only the tools required for the task. Treat network access and secrets as explicit capabilities rather than defaults.
Verification belongs in the loop
Run tests, static checks and targeted evaluations automatically. Require stronger human review for migrations, security-sensitive code, schema changes and production-impacting operations.
Make every task reversible
Small commits, isolated workspaces, explicit diffs and fast rollback make agent delegation safer. The goal is to contain a bad change without turning an experiment into an incident.
